The caldera path, from Fira to Oia

Ten kilometres of views over the volcano

The caldera path, from Fira to Oia

The finest walk on the island follows the rim of the caldera: three to four hours on foot, with the volcano on one side and the white villages on the other.

The path that follows the rim of the caldera from Fira to Oia is the finest walk on the island: about ten kilometres, three to four hours on foot, with the volcano on one side and the white villages on the other.

When to go

Leave early in the morning, before the heat and the crowds, or in the late afternoon to reach Oia for the sunset. Bring water, a hat and good shoes: the path is stony in places.

The stages

From Fira, the path climbs gently to Firostefani and Imerovigli, the highest village of the caldera. Then come the wildest stretch, around the rock of Skaros, and the descent to Oia.

Our tip: a taxi brings you back to the hotel in a quarter of an hour. Ask at the reception, we book it for you.
